St. Lucia

One of the larger Caribbean Windward Isles, St Lucia is an island of contrast, being mountainous and with lush tropical rain forests, a dramatic coastline of ravines and perilous cliffs, yet some wonderful white sandy beaches and cultivated agricultural land around the more moderately sloped coastal fringes. The twin Pitons (Gros Piton and Petit Piton), striking cone-shaped peaks in the south west of the island are one of the scenic and iconic natural highlights of the Caribbean.

Characteristics
This busy and bustling island, decided to focus on building up its share of the Caribbean tourist trade, which is mainly concentrated North of Castries. There are expensive villas around a championship golf course on the Cap estate, a world-class marina, luxury spas, along with hotels, bars and restaurants around the Rodney Bay area. It is also a popular destination for cruise ships.

Beaches
Most popular white sandy beaches are North of Castries on the leeward (West) coast, Pigeon Point, Reduit and Vigie. There is a small beach at Marigot Bay, the location for the famous film Dr. Doolitle and further beaches around Hewanorra/Vieux Fort in the South.

Things to Do
Most forms of water sports including sailing, fishing, diving and snorkelling. Island tours, helicopter tours, hiking, horse riding, golf, tennis and eco-tours. St Lucia also boasts the only "drive-in" volcano in the world. Rodney Bay Marina hosts the finish of the annual Atlantic Rally for Cruisers (ARC).

Shopping
Good shopping particularly in and around Castries & Rodney Bay. Fresh fruit and vegetables readily available. Good for souvenirs and gifts. Tax free shopping at the cruise ship terminal in Castries and at Hewanorra International Airport.

Restaurants & Nightlife
Wide variety of restaurants catering for most forms of cuisine. Lively nightlife mostly revolving around the resorts and hotels, particularly during the main holiday season. Most restaurants have band evening and there are some nightclubs.

Getting Around
Taxis and "dollar taxis" (minibuses) are numerous. Car hire is readily available with booths at both Hewanorra and Vigie airports.

Getting There
Hewanorra is the International Airport at the South of the island with direct flights to the UK, Europe and North America. Castries has a small airport (Vigie), which handles regional flights to and from other Caribbean islands.
